WSLS 10 is pleased to announce that its unwavering commitment to excellence in broadcasting was recognized last weekend at both the Virginia Association of Broadcasters (VAB) and the prestigious 66th Capital Emmy Awards.
We were fortunate enough to bring home several awards, a tremendous honor for a news team that is dedicated to lifting community voices and sharing their stories.

Here’s a look at the awards we received:
National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter 66th EMMY Award:
- Best News Special: “On the Frontline - Virginia National Guard at the Border” by John Carlin, Jeff Perzan, and Maisy Carvalho. WSLS followed the Virginia National Guard to the Texas/Mexico border, taking an in-depth look at the humanitarian crisis at the border.
VAB Awards:
- Best Documentary (1st Place): “On the Frontline” by John Carlin, Jeff Perzan, and Maisy Carvalho.
- Best Human-Interest Series (1st Place): “In the Deep Blue Ridge” by Japhanie Gray and Peter Mason.
- Best in Investigative Reporting (1st Place): “Officer Altercation” by Alyssa Rae and Carter Malpass.
- Outstanding Sports Coverage (1st Place): A huge team effort led by John Appicello, Eric Johnson, and Brooke Leonard, with significant contributions from many team members including, Greg Moore, Paul Eldert, Eric Cardwell, Logan Brown, Carter Malpass, Thomas Mundy, Sydney Jaxtheimer, Conner Dietrich, Ryan Burgess, James Stokes, Mark Rizzo and Ben Williams.
We also took home second place in several categories, which includes:
- Best Commercial: WSLS Creative Services for BSR Legal Group.
- Best Public Affairs Program: “WSLS Community Connections: Autism Perspectives.”
- Outstanding Newscast: WSLS News at Six, by Chelsey Allen and Amit Patel.
