Downtown Roanoke house fire caused by child with lighter ruled accidental

ROANOKE, Va. – Sunday night's house fire in downtown Roanoke was caused by a child playing with a lighter and has been ruled accidental, according to Roanoke City Fire-EMS.

All five cats that were in the house during the fire have been accounted for and are doing well.

Damage estimates are still being worked out.

The American Red Cross Virginia Region is assisting the two adults and two children displaced by the fire.


ORIGINAL STORY

Crews responded to a house fire on 14th Street Southwest in Roanoke around 5:40 p.m. Sunday. 

Fire officials say they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the house when they arrived. 

Two kids and one adult were taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial with some smoke inhalation.

Four were overall displaced. They are being helped by the American Red Cross. 

The fire is under investigation.
