BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. – A fire engulfed a house on Citation Lane in Bedford County on Sunday, according to the Forest Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire started at approximately 5 o'clock, and fire crews from Forest, Lynchburg, Boonesboro and Big Island helped extinguish it.
There were no injuries, but the house was destroyed by the flames. Authorities say the family who lived in the house had recently moved in.
Forest Volunteer Fire Department Chief Marty Coleman says the crews struggled at times to put out the fire because the nearest hydrant was a half mile away from the fire. However, he says the firefighters were trained and motivated to keep the fire from spreading.
"We train just like any sports team, the difference is sports teams know their gameday," Coleman said. "They know when their game is going to be. We have to be ready every day. By being prepared, when we have a small hiccup like that, you can't tell."
Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire.
