WASHINGTON, D.C. – Sen. Tim Kaine has successfully defended his U.S. Senate seat against Corey Stewart.
Kaine was declared the projected winner just 30 seconds after polls closed on Tuesday night.
Kaine won with 56 percent of the vote.
Polls leading up to today indicated Kaine would win by double digits. This will be his second term in the Senate.
Kaine said this election was a referendum on the future of our country.
"I think tonight Virginia showed who we are and who we aren't. Virginia sent a message, with our polls closing first in the nation with American values and Virginia values," said Kaine.
Kaine out-raised Stewart on the campaign trail, raising more than $21 million to Stewart's $2.3 million.
