VINTON, Va. – People in the Roanoke Valley will soon have another place to ice skate thanks to a $2 million deal.
Penalty Box Partners LLC announced the purchase of the Lancerlot Sports Complex in Vinton.
Once home to the Virginia Lancers and the Roanoke Valley Rebels, officials say the move is part of an effort to grow local ice sports.
The complex recently operated as a membership-based fitness center, but the new owners say they plan to renovate part of it to include a second sheet of ice for the area.
Organizers said the ice rink will be a place for recreational hockey, public ice skating and recreational figure skating.
The Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs say the new ice rink will serve as a secondary practice location for the team.
Construction is expected to begin by February and the owners expect the ice to be ready for community use in the fall of 2018.
