Giles Animal Rescue thrift shop reopens after renovations

Two pets for adoption will be at the open house

GILES COUNTY – A thrift store reopening in Giles County Saturday supports an animal rescue group. Giles Animal Rescue, founded in 1999, took up residence in the former fish market building two years ago. The 501c3 operates on a volunteer system separate from the Giles County Animal Shelter.

Thanks in part to the support of the community, the shop has thrived and the rescue group slowly undertook the improvements, and added indoor kennels where the animals fostered by volunteers might catch the eye of potential adopters.

With its recent renovations and expansion complete, Giles Animal Rescue will host an open house on Saturday, November 11, from 11 am to 3 pm at its Thrift Shop and Adoption Center at 5502 Virginia Avenue in Pembroke.

Two pets for adoption will be at the open house: Pumpkin, a calico kitten found with a fish hook embedded in her mouth, and Thor, a 20-lb rat terrier whose name reflects how big he thinks he is.

Proceeds from the Thrift Shop and Adoption Center help fund vet care for the foster pets and for the group's spay/neuter program for low-or-no-income people with pets, and for the area's feral cats. Light refreshments will be offered at the open house.
