ROANOKE, Va. – A local therapy dog is now the official national mascot for a veterans group.
Roanoke's Post 64, which is made up of former and active members of the 29th Infantry Division, recognized Powmia during a meeting Wednesday.
Powmia is owned by a veteran and has been a certified therapy dog since she was 2 years old. She travels around to local hospitals and veterans centers and also performs military exercises.
On Wednesday, Post 64 honored her as its therapy mascot with a special vest including the division's emblem.
"She conveys warmth, love, comfort and she does a wonderful job of it. She is a true therapy dog," said Bill King, Post 64 commander.
Powmia stands at attention, marches and can do pushups as part of her military training.
