CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - People in Christiansburg know how to shred and Monday, they broke a record doing it with 105,000 pounds shredded at the WSLS 10 Kodiak Shredding Shred-A-Thon.
"We bought our house in 2012 and we have just been saving things that we thought were important," said Melissa Wright.
She and her husband cleaned out two file cabinets in the process.
"I can actually put things in there that I need to use and not just keep all these receipts for things that I've paid over the years," she said.
65,000 pounds were shredded at the last WSLS 10 Shred-A-Thon in Christiansburg in May. Added to that on Monday, a local company with a thousand boxes of documents to destroy.
Bill Wieringa stopped by in May and brought two trucks worth of papers this go around.
"We've got two years worth of stuff here today," he said. "So it's quite a bit."
Wieringa said he's already planning for the next shred event.
"We just store it up and bring it whenever you all have an event."
Tony Edmonds took Monday off from work to deliver years worth of papers belonging to him and two of his family members.
Monday's total puts us at nearly 1.8 million pounds shredded since the WSLS 10 Shred-A-Thon's kicked off in 2014.
