CHRISTIANSBURG (WSLS 10) - A petition to remove Montgomery County Circuit Court Clerk Erica Williams is now in the hands of the circuit court.
The group responsible for this effort filed the petition with 2,394 signatures on Friday.

The petition started in January when Williams did not reappoint four deputy clerks. She claimed in an audit report that she made staffing changes due to financial errors made by her office.
Now, the registrar's office will have to verify the signatures. If it passes that step, the case will go before a circuit court judge.
Williams said Friday that she welcomes the court process because it will give her a chance to set the record straight and address personnel concerns. Her full statement is below:
While I am disappointed that a select group of citizens found it necessary to file a petition for my removal, I respect the process and their right to do so. For months I have been unable to address their concerns in the media. This judicial forum will give me an opportunity to address their concerns and, hopefully, to correct the record and to set their minds at ease. As I have repeatedly stated, I understand the personnel decisions I made might not have been popular, but I made them to better serve the citizens of Montgomery County. I am confident that when all of the facts are made known our judicial system will reach a decision that will reaffirm your faith in me and in my ability to serve Montgomery County. In the meantime, while this case is working its way through the court, my office will continue to provide the excellent customer service to the citizens that they have grown to expect."
