Opening weekend for 611 excursions takes locomotive to Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) -The steam queen is returning to her home state of virginia Saturday afternoon.

It's opening weekend for the 611 excursions, and it's coming through our area.

The Steam Queen is trekking from Spencer, North Carolina to Lynchburg, where it's scheduled to arrive at noon.

The Virginia Museum of Transportation employees say people from all over the world have purchased tickets.

""I've been absolutely stunned at the amount of people who follow the 611 locomotive," said spokesperson Walker Nelms. "She's been incredible. People from all over the world, we have people coming from Australia, New Zealand, just to ride this."

Tickets for Sunday's excursion to Ashville sold out in less than an hour.  Tickets are still available however for future dates

Here's the 2016 611 public excursion schedule:

April 9, 2016 – The Virginian, Spencer, N.C., to Lynchburg, Va. SOLD OUT

April 10, 2016 – The Blue Ridge Special, Spencer, N.C., to Asheville, N.C.

April 23, 2016 – The Roanoker, Greensboro, N.C. to Roanoke, Va.

April 24, 2016 – The Roanoker, Greensboro, N.C. to Roanoke, Va.

May 7, 2016 – The Powhatan Arrow, Roanoke, Va., to Lynchburg, Va.

May 7, 2016 – The Pelican, Roanoke, Va., to Walton (Radford), Va.

May 8, 2016 – The Powhatan Arrow, Roanoke, Va., to Lynchburg, Va.

May 8, 2016 – The Pelican, Roanoke, Va., to Walton (Radford), Va.

June 4, 2016 – The American, Manassas, Va., to Front Royal, Va., (runs once)

June 5, 2016 – The American, Manassas, Va., to Front Royal, Va., (runs twice
