Walters served on the Christiansburg Rescue Squad and helped start the Riner Rescue Squad. He still aids on calls with Riner when he can, and is working to get a new station built.
Walters said he did not know he was receiving the award Thursday, and his family and friends had to trick him into going to Richmond to accept it.
It is estimated that Walters has gone on more than 44,000 calls in his five decade career. He said the trick to longevity as a rescue worker is never to dwell on the last call. Instead, always be ready for the next call.
