ROANOKE (WSLS10) -- During a big rivalry game between the Virginia Tech and University of Virginia Ice Hockey teams Friday night, fans will have a chance to hit the ice...with teddy bears.
It's part of the annual "Teddy Bear Brigade." The Virginia Tech Hockey team will ask all fans to bring teddy bears to throw on the ice every time they score. All teddy bears will be given to Gleaning for the World, a non-profit based in Concord that will distribute the stuffed animals to children in need around the world.

Head Coach Joey Mullen says last year they received around 400 teddy bears.
"(After) everything that the community gives us. These people spend their hard earned money coming out on the weekends to support these kids that they don't have to, so it's nice to give back whenever we can," Mullen said.
The game begins at 7 p.m. at the Berglund Center on Friday. WSLS 10's Rachel Lucas will drop the ceremonial puck on the ice at the beginning of the game.
