The Roanoke City Police Department has unveiled a new text message system to report crimes anonymously:

- On your cell or smart phone, when it asks you to enter the text message recipient, type the numbers 274637 (the numbers spell out the word "crimes")
- Start your message with RoanokePD. You must start the text message with this or the system will not know which law enforcement agency to send the message to.
- After you've started the message with RoanokePD, enter your crime tip. Try to be as specific and descriptive as possible. After you've finished the message, hit "send."
"This is another avenue for citizens who may have crime information to share it with the Roanoke Police Department in an anonymous way," said Roanoke Police Chief Chris Perkins, in a written release. "We hope that those who may have been hesitant in the past to report tips, will take advantage of this."
