PULASKI (WSLS 10) - A Pulaski police officer received a special award this week for his heroism after a shooting earlier this year.

Officer Adam Abdelaziz received the VALOR Award by the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police. Back in May, the officer found a suspiciously parked vehicle at the Pulaski Storage Buildings on Bob White Blvd.

Police say Officer Abdelaziz came under gunfire after he approached the driver of the vehicle who appeared to be asleep.

That's when Abdelaziz shot back. It was determined shortly after that the driver, identified as Robert Frost, shot himself. Frost was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The Pulaski Police Department says Abdelaziz took the appropriate actions to defend himself and the student intern with him.
