3 Riverside is a Silver Leed-Certified building, which means it's designed to reduce waste and operating costs, conserve water and waste, and provide an overall healthier environment.

Tuesday's tour included the center's green roof and a look at solar paneled ambulances.

Carilion says the idea is in support of the health of the community it serves.

"We want to increase our recycling we want to decrease our Energy utilization and setting these benchmarks will help us ensure that we are doing that the way we want to," Carilion's Efficiency Coordinator Sara Wohlford explained.

Roanoke's Sustainability Coordinator Nell Boyle echoed those remarks, saying:

"We really want to reengage a whole new group and a whole new generation of businesses is to look at sustainability and some of the value of those practices not only to the environment but to their employees."

Tour-goers said they hope to continue the conversations started today so other businesses find ways to make changes that make sense for them and the environment.
