BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Why choose between a remote controlled helicopter or car, when you can have them both?

Friday, 12 teams of Virginia Tech and U.S. Air Force Academy students showed off their handmade vehicles that flew and drove through an obstacle course.

It was all part of the Additive Vehicle Design Competition.  Each creation was made through a 3-D printer, then put to the test on a course that simulates a disaster scene.

The goal is to advance this type of technology for search and rescue and reconnaissance missions.

More than 200 students competed for $15,000 in prizes.
