Roanoke Catholic School teachers and staff wear student uniforms

Seniors raise more than $8,500 for Hurricane Harvey relief

All Roanoke Catholic School teachers and staff wore student uniforms Friday, while students enjoyed no uniforms.

This was incentive after the senior class exceeded its fundraising goal to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. They raised more than $8,500 for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul House in a Box program for Houston families who have lost their homes from flooding.

"I will dedicate class time for us to do service instead of learn about service. We can actually live Catholic social teaching instead of talk about it," said Ellen VanDen Eykel, Roanoke Catholic teacher.

"I would be lost if I didn't have a home anymore so now that these families get to start over with the money we raised it means a lot to me and all of us," said Niki Patel, Roanoke Catholic senior.

Every $2,100 raised provides a family of four with new beds, furniture, kitchen supplies and other household items.
