FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) - For the first time since before prohibition, Twin Creeks Distillery will be the first Franklin County distillery to sell moonshine legally since before prohibition.

The craft of making "white lightning" goes back to the early 1900's for Chris Prillaman's family.

"Being from around here you see and hear all kinds of stuff about the history, and I always had an interest in it," says Prillaman.

Decades after Prillaman's great grandfathers made moonshine, he's doing it in his own factory in Rocky Mount.

Prillaman owns Twin Creeks Distillery and starting on January 2nd his moonshine will be sold in stores.

"A lot of people around the country are doing it and us sitting here in Franklin County we got such a name for it we might as well try it too," says Prillaman.

Franklin County considers itself the "Moonshine Capital of the World."

Roddy Moore with the Blue Ridge Institute and Museum at Ferrum College says understanding the history behind the white liquor is so important.

"I think it's part of the history of this year and people need to understand it," says Moore.

Prillaman highlights the history behind moonshine on his labels.
