Blacksburg sees a boost in sales now students are back on VT's Campus

BLACKSBURG (WSLS10) Students are flocking back to campus and gearing up for the fall semester at Virginia Tech which means businesses, like some restaurants have been swamped now that students are coming back.

Some store owners compared sales on move-in day to similar amounts they would make on when a home game is held in Blacksburg.

Workers at Joe's Diner in Downtown Blacksburg is packed with people they said they've seen a 25% increase in sales this Saturday compared to others during the Summer.

The waiters at Benny Marzano's said they'll see a 60% jump in sales now that the students are back.

They said they'll see an increase after 10 o'clock.

"It's going to be nice finally to be picking back up, the town of Blacksburg takes a little nap during the Summer, so we're pumped, we're rested and ready to come out and serve some pizza," Cameron Lilly, who works at Benny Marzano's said.

People are also buying gifts.

The owners at T.R. Collection, a gift shop in Blacksburg said they've seen extra foot traffic this week.

"It's been a great week, we're happy to see the new students, it's a vibrancy downtown we really love and we've seen a lot of students come in and bring their parents in so it's been a wonderful week," Michelle Raub, the owner of T.R. Collection said.
