WASHINGTON (AP) - The Mid-Atlantic region is gearing up for a late-winter storm that could bring more than half a foot of snow.
Rain was expected to change over to snow in the early-morning hours Thursday. Many school systems had already announced Wednesday that they would be closed on Thursday.

The National Weather Service was calling for 6 to 10 inches of snow in central Maryland and 4 to 8 inches in the District of Columbia, northern Virginia and much of Delaware.
Highway officials in the region are warning drivers to stay off the roads unless necessary, with heavy snow expected during the morning rush hour. Because the region was getting rain ahead of the snow, crews were unable to pre-treat roads with salt.
