ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Early Tuesday morning volunteers from the WSLS 10 family and the community came together to begin making a holiday wish come true for Veronica Garcia and her family.

Roanoke Valley Habitat for Humanity Director Karen Mason explains, "This was pulled together amazingly fast. When we were approached with this concept, we thought it was an amazing opportunity. The community has supported [us] and everybody pitched in to make it happen."

The rain kept the team from raising the first wall but it didn't keep crews from getting a good start. From wrapping the home, to installing doors and windows, the progress was happening at a fast pace.

Habitat for Humanity Construction Director Brian Clark helped crews navigate the work in spite of the weather.  He explained, "It's just great to be able to get the windows in and some of the stuff on the back wall, just to get everybody out here and get started it's fun."

Volunteers agreed. It is fun to see what a community effort can lead to in a few short weeks. WSLS 10 hopes to present the keys to a new home for the Garcia family. The deadline is December 19.

Veronica Garcia called the Roanoke Valley Rescue Mission home two years ago. She has been putting in hundreds of sweat equity hours building habitat homes for others and she will help with the Home for the Holidays project too.

Garcia said, "I don't have any family here, so just to see everybody coming together to do something for me it makes me really happy. Having a home is so amazing.  It is great and it is a blessing.  I always said everything falls into place and I really appreciate everybody's hard work."

Each new Habitat for Humanity home has a unique excitement. Mason says, "Every beginning is a new beginning for the family and a new beginning for Habitat, a new celebration."
