ROANOKE CITY (WSLS 10) - A man being named as a Red Cross Hero works every day in a classroom where every single student has a different need.

Fishburn Park Elementary Special Education Teacher Matthew Newton was chosen as this year's Red Cross Education Hero because he goes above and beyond, inside and outside of the classroom.

A wheelchair swing is a great example of the improvement Matthew has made at Fishburn Park. He took the time to apply for a local grant for the swing, and was chosen.

"I don't feel like a hero, I feel like a teacher that is doing his best every day to try to help his kids become heroes," Newton explained.

"I couldn't think of another teacher that could be more deserving of such an honor." Judy Lackey, Fishburn Park Elementary School Principal.

When Matthew got the call from the Red Cross, he thought they were calling about a partnership with the school.
