Man recovering after swift water rescue in Pittsylvania County

Man trimming trees, pinned down when tree fell on his hand

PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. – A man was recovering Tuesday night after being rescued from the banks of the Dan River in Pittsylvania County.

The man was trimming trees Tuesday morning on the south bank of the river near Rocky Knoll Lane when a tree fell on his hand and pinned him down.

The Danville Life Saving Crew and the Pittsylvania County Sheriff's Office deployed boats and were able to find the man after about 20 minutes of searching.

Because the man was alone and pinned down inside the tree line, it was not easy for first responders to find him.

A concerned citizen on the north bank of the river heard the man shouting and called 911.

Once first responders were in the water, the citizen told them the man was directly across the river from him and the first responders were then able to locate the man.

Once he was freed, he was taken to a hospital in North Carolina for treatment.
