MARTINSVILLE, Va. – All the recent rain has created a sinkhole in Martinsville.
It's on Kathren Street in a residential area, but crews tell WSLS 10 there's not much impact to people living nearby.
Police found the sinkhole around 7 p.m. Tuesday night. When crews arrived, they found a 15-inch pipe had collapsed.
Public works crews say these may start popping up more often.
"All municipalities, most of the time, years ago, they put in galvanized pipes because they were just the cheapest thing to do at the time. And 30-40 years was the lifespan on 'em. The lifespan has run out so we're having failures now and that's commonplace in most municipalities anymore,” said Martinsville Public Works Superintendent of Operations Randy Gregory.
Crews plan to start work to repair the sinkhole when the weather dries up next week.
