Tractor-trailer driver falls asleep, hits 4 other trucks on I-81 South

The driver is charged with reckless driving

BOTETOURT COUNTY, Va. – State police say a tractor-trailer hauling hot dogs hit other tractor-trailers near a rest stop on I-81. 

It happened at the Troutville rest area entrance ramp around 3:10 a.m. Wednesday. State police say the driver fell asleep, ran off the roadway and hit four parked tractor-trailers. 

One southbound lane remains closed at mile marker 158 in Botetourt County. It is expected to reopen around 11:30 a.m. 

Alexander C. Stevens, 31, of Arizona, is charged with reckless driving. He had to be taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. State police say he was wearing a seat belt. 

The drivers of the four other tractor-trailers that were hit are charged with parking on the interstate.Â
