Heather Heyer Way unveiled in Charlottesville to honor woman killed during Unite the Right rally

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The city of Charlottesville honored Heather Heyer, the woman who died during the Aug. 12 Unite the Right rally, on Wednesday.

The rally has resulted in major changes within the city, including a couple of city officials stepping down, but Wednesday marked a day of remembrance.

It was an emotional morning as dozens of people gathered for the dedication of the street where Heyer was killed.

The road is now named Heather Heyer Way.

Charlottesville City Council unanimously voted to rename the stretch of road in her honor back in October.

Heyer's mother, Susan Bro, requested the city rename the road instead of dedicating a statue or park because she believes it's the best way for her daughter's legacy to live on.

"I want them to think that Heather was an ordinary person who managed to stand up for what she believed in and that made an extraordinary impact, because I don't know what the impact of her actions is going to be. Good, bad, or otherwise, and so we all need to stand up and take a stand for what's right, take a stand for what's good in this world," Bro said.

There's still a memorial for Heyer at 4th Street and Water Street with writing on the wall and flowers on the street.
