Tyler Perry is bringing his iconic Madea character out of retirement.

The world-renowned actor, director, producer and screenwriter announced on Instagram that a new film, “A Madea Homecoming,” is in the works and is set to debut on Netflix in 2022. He shared the news in a video on Instagram, comically slipping in and out of his Madea voice.

“Hey, guess what’s happening! Madea is coming to Netflix,” he said. “Too much is going on in the country, and we need to laugh. I was done, but she’s coming back. Madea on Netflix, I can’t wait.”

This announcement comes after Perry had thoughts about retiring Madea about three years ago following his release of “Tyler Perry’s A Madea Family Funeral.” In 2018, he spoke to Entertainment Tonight about his plans.

“Nothing happens to her [at the funeral] but it’s just time,” he told ET. “I’m all about legacy right now. I’ve done that been there, I can’t do that any bigger and any better than what it is. So it is time to do other things.”

The 51-year-old is excited for what’s to come and is also in the process of creating a prequel series with Showtime that shows Madea’s early life. In the series, Madea will be in her twenties, living in 1972 Atlanta.
