March Finishing Up Its Best February Impression

Winter has certainly “struck back” in the month of March.

The snow managed to work its way around much of the area, but the cold has found us all. The numbers in comparison with our record breaking warmth in February are quite staggering. In terms of below normal days, we had four all of last month. This month through 17 days we have more than doubled that number.

The next stat is even more mind boggling. In the last 68 years only twice (1960, 1984) has a February been warmer than the following March. We have a really really good shot to make 2017 the third in that stretch. We will have to make up almost six degrees in the remaining 14 days of March. Not likely.

The temperatures above are the averages of the daytime highs and overnight lows all divided by the number of days in the month. The numbers in ( ) represent the departure from normal for the entire month…March’s numbers are through the 17th. Since March came in like a lion we’ll wait and see if the tale holds true and we go out like a lamb as we are two weeks away from the end of the month and just one day away from the official start to spring.

Some would argue though with the exception of the last couple of weeks it has already been feeling a lot like it.
