The Streak Is Over, But The Heat Rolls On

One degree. One degree robbed us from getting into the top ten of longest 90 degree day stretches.

SO CLOSE

That temperature of 89 degrees on Friday really didn’t feel much better than 90 so why not jump into weather history. Oh well! Our streak officially ended on Friday with that temperature of 89 degrees at the Roanoke Regional Airport giving us a grand total of 12 straight days of 90 degree heat.

That number of 12 puts us just outside the top ten longest stretches of 90 degree heat. There were multiple years of thirteen day stretches with the latest coming back in the 80s. 15 days would have tied us for 5th longest stretch which we would have been flirting with had we just found one more degree last Friday.

The 80s were short lived as we did jump back to 90 degrees Saturday afternoon which now brings our total for 90 degree days so far up to 19…quickly approaching the total from all of last year and our average number for the summer.

90s

We do have more heat in the forecast as we start August on Monday. Yes you read that right..August begins Monday. While we’re not talking heat indices climbing toward the century mark this week, actual air temperatures will still hang out in the upper 80s to lower 90s at least for the next three days. Climatologically speaking, August is another hot month as we all know. The average temperature only drops three degrees from the start of the month to the finish.

August

Arguably a bigger thing to point out is that we lose more than hour of daylight as we trek through the eighth month of the year!
