WSLS 10 –  Serving Southwest Virginia for over 60 years!

WSLS was the first television station to serve central and Southwest Virginia, officially signing on the air December 11, 1952. WSLS 10 was licensed by Shenandoah Life Insurance Company as one of Southwest Virginia’s pioneer stations.

WSLS 10’s studios were built in the early 1950s. The transmitter site is 13.5 air miles Southwest of Roanoke on top of Poor Mountain, which has an elevation of 4,041 feet in Roanoke County.

WSLS 10 offers viewers premium quality news, weather sports and entertainment on every screen. WSLS 10 is owned by Graham Media Group, a subsidiary of Graham Holdings Company, owns seven local television stations – each in a top-70 market and all recognized as news leaders.

WSLS 10 is a Station of Firsts:

  • First television station to broadcast to Central and SW Virginia.
  • First station to broadcast in “full living color”.
  • First station to telecast from a remote location.
  • First station to use video tape.
  • First station to originate a Network program from the local station. (The NBC Today Show)
  • First station to use electronic news gathering equipment.
  • First station to broadcast network programming in stereo.
  • First station to broadcast live local news in HD in the Roanoke market.
