American Red Cross heroes accept awards at morning breakfast

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - After weeks of telling their stories on WSLS 10 at 6 p.m. Tuesday morning the American Red Cross heroes accepted their awards.

Twelve awards were handed out to dozens of recipients from across the valley at the Hotel Roanoke including the Roanoke STAR Council.

The group, which stands for Students Taking Action in Roanoke, won this year's Education Award for helping homeless students find shelter.

One school administrator gave us a better idea of the difference students are making among their peers.

"Over the last two years total there's been a total raised of about $50,000. Now, that sounds like a lot of money, but when you still have over 400 students that are homeless we've done remarkable things, but the work isn't over yet, we're just starting," explained Kathy Duncan, ROTEC principal.

This is the 13th annual Celebration of Heroes breakfast.

The sold-out event was full of family, friends and co-workers supporting the winners.
