Franklin County rescue squad volunteer named Red Cross Medical Hero

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The Red Cross Medical Hero truly lives a life of service.

He's a Franklin County man who spent years running rescue calls all hours of the day, but wanted to do even more to give back.

A welcome home sign greeted Kaleb Ferguson at his grandparent's house after a nearly year-long deployment to Qatar.

The 23-year-old just returned to Franklin County on Saturday and has been quick to catch up with family.

It's clear this is the community he loves.

Kaleb started volunteering with the Ferrum Rescue Squad back in high school.

"For me, the best thing is the people. Not just the people on the rescue squad, but the people in the community as well. Helping them make a better community, helping someone in need, there is no greater reward that you can actually find here in the community than joining and being part of something like that," Ferguson said.

Serving Franklin County wasn't enough for Kaleb, he signed up for the National Guard and spent the past year overseas.
