LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Serving two meals a day for those in need is becoming harder for The Salvation Army of Greater Lynchburg as the number of people needing assistance is growing.
For some, breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day and The Salvation Army wants to continue providing that meal to residents and those coming from outside the facility.
"Granted I am homeless and thankful I do get two meals a day, but for breakfast sometimes you would like to see more than cereal or oatmeal," said Barbara Harris.
But the nonprofit is experiencing a supply storage in breakfast items.
Since February, The Salvation Army has been feeding more people than usual. From an average of 40 to now serving 80 people for breakfast.
"We're seeing a lot more senior citizens and veterans and a lot of people who are having a hard time paying their electric and utility bills and they don't have enough money," said Food Service Director Carol Kirby.
Kirby said there's no budget set aside to purchase food and they rely 100 percent on the community for donations to serve other.
Cereal, oatmeal and sugar are the three things the Salvation Army is in dire need of right now.
When you put the call out people answer. It was on the heart of Bill Nolley to show an act of kindness to drop a buggy full of donations to The Salvation Army.
"In retirement, you have to do stuff to focus on yourself or you will end up in the ditch. I try to do it every day," said Nolley, a volunteer at The Salvation Army.
"It doesn't take a lot. If people would just bring gravy, a cup of fruit or anything to help us feed our community," said Kirby.
While the supply cabinet is low on food, The Salvation Army said it will never turn anyone away whose in need a meal.
Donations are accepted 24 hours at their location on 2211 Park Avenue.
