Friends say Roanoke man arrested for security scare at White House had mental health issues

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – Friends say a Roanoke man facing false bomb threat charges after a security scare at the White house suffered from mental health issues.

Sean Keoughan drove to a security checkpoint Saturday night, got out and announced that he had a bomb in his car. Secret Service agents say he later stated “this is a test”.

Keith Bohon was shocked to see his friend Sean Patrick Keoughan’s name on the front page of Monday’s paper.

“The first thing that went through my mind is that I thought to myself, ‘Gosh, I hope he didn’t get to a mental place where he was around someone bad in D.C. or a radical crowd?’ said Bohon.

Police say Keoughan, 29, drove a stolen car to a security gate near the White House and was arrested after stating “there’s a bomb in the trunk.” He later told authorities that the object in the trunk was an asteroid and that he communicates telepathically with the president.

Keoughan’s familiy members declined to comment for this story. Bohon described him as a good guy who loves the outdoors and joined the Navy to help protect our country. When asked about Saturday’s incident near the president’s home, Bohon said Sean wouldn’t harm anyone.

“He was the guy that was quick to raise his hand and sign up to defend our country,” said Bohon. “I am certain he is not the individual to take any serious threat in harming anyone in our government who he swore to protect.”

Bohon said Sean struggles with mental health and substance abuse problems. Friends said they hope he gets treatment to help with mental illness.

Keoughan remains in a federal facility in Washington D.C.
