Responding officer to FreightCar America shooting named Red Cross Hero

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – It’s been said when everyone is running away from dangerous situations our first responder heroes run toward them.

The first officer on the scene of last year’s FreightCar America shooting is this year’s Law Enforcement Hero.

In eight and half years with the Roanoke Police Department, Officer Brandon Gill has responded to many dangerous situations, but nothing like the morning dispatch received a call about an active shooter at FreightCar America.

Gill found the scene and the shooter, who had shot himself, before he turned to the four shooting victims to help.

As a trained medic, he started first aid until medical responders arrived.

When asked if he was a hero he responded no.

“There was another guy on scene that did Blue Ridge Fire and Rescue, that was one of the guys I initially saw in the building. I would say that he is probably a lot more of a hero than I was. He didn’t have a gun with him, didn’t have a whole bunch of armor or anything like that, nobody else to watch his back or anything, I’d say he’s probably a lot more of a hero than I am,” Gill explained.

This is the fourth award he’s received since that morning, but he said each is undeserving.
