McKinnon family named 2017 Red Cross Community Impact Hero

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The 2017 Red Cross Community Impact Hero is a couple who has experienced truly unimaginable loss.

Since the tragic deaths of their two sons in a house fire, Lindsay and Tom McKinnon have worked to educate the community on fire safety.

They've found joy giving back to the community by telling their story at the Sound the Alarm Summit and Roanoke's Go Fest.

Tom and Lindsay have raised awareness by pleading with parents to take the reins.

"We can't rely on our kindergarten fire safety education that we grew up with from decades ago," Lindsay said.

"I mean it shouldn't be up to a 6-year-old to kind of bring that notion home from school and be like, 'hey, we need to be prepared," explained Tom.

Unfortunately, they know firsthand an escape plan needs to be second nature and that's their primary message to families.

If you would like to attend the Red Cross Celebration of Heroes Breakfast it's Tuesday, March 28.
