Roanoke Valley Gives 2017 kicks off with big donations

ROANOKE (WSLS10)-- Roanoke Valley Gives Day is a major fundraising effort by the Foundation for Roanoke Valley, to raise money for more than 150 local nonprofits.

The event kicked off at midnight, with donations quickly rolling in throughout the morning. By 7 a.m. more than $58,500 had already been donated to local nonprofits.

Today's event has a goal to raise half a million dollars by midnight tonight. As far as donating goes, there's something for everyone-- Roanoke Outside, The Jefferson Center and Roanoke Outside are just a few of the organizations that will benefit from the online day of giving.

The minimum donation amount is $10, meaning you don't have to empty out your bank account to make a difference. Donation amounts have ranged from the $10 minimum to a major $15,000 donation made to Susan G. Komen, Virginia Blue Ridge.
