Averett students ‘Teach It Forward’ in Danville

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) – Averett University students are helping tutor elementary and middle school students in Danville.

Teams of students go to eight different after-school sites, such as the Boys and Girls Club, and work with the students.

The work is part of the university’s second annual Teach It Forward! Challenge.

It was created in 2016 after students expressed a desire to tutor in local schools.

The teams compete to see which one can rack up the most tutoring hours by the end of the two-month challenge.

“I can most definitely relate to what some of these kids are going through, but for me to just be there, that role model for them to look up to saying ‘I want to be like that guy one day’ it means the most,” Averett sophomore Joshua Davis said as he worked with students at the Boys and Girls Club.

The challenge runs through the end of the month.
