Volunteer Fire Chief Jerry Caldwell was driving to a rural fire and rescue station responding to a fire call, according to the Roanoke County Fire & Rescue Department. Police determined his vehicle hit a patch of ice, causing the vehicle to run off the road and hit a tree. Investigators don't believe speed was a factor.

Caldwell was transported to a local hospital for multiple serious injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Chief Caldwell has been the fire chief of the Catawba Fire Company for 40 years.
