College students using their spring break to help others

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) – Instead of sleeping, more than 40 college students helped renovate a home for a family in need during their spring break.

Students from three out-of-state colleges came together to make the home complete by rolling up their sleeves, building a deck and cleaning the yard and other manual labor.

The house, owned by Renovation Alliance, is a foreclosure that will be restored and eventually put up for sale.

LyVette Byrd, from Community College at Philadelphia, went back to school after 30 years to finish a degree she started. This is her second time spending her spring break making an impact on helping others.

“It was a great opportunity to get to know other students as well. I’m a non-traditional student so often they see me and they go which faculty are you? I’m like what to you mean?” said Byrd.

Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville had the smallest number of students with nine women.

“I’m really proud of this group. Every time I look around, they are working and doing things. Taking an initiative when you have such a large crowd seems like you have to make a judgment call on what needs to be done,” explained Quincy Phipps, with Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Renovation Alliance plans to host two more colleges to continue work on the home.
