Virginia Tech Earns #9 Seed in NCAA Tournament

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10 SPORTS) -

Virginia Tech invited the fans and community to Cassell Coliseum Sunday afternoon as the basketball team anxiously watched the NCAA selection show. Just minutes into the broadcast, it was announced Virginia Tech was awarded the number nine seed in the East Region.

This is the first time in ten years the Hokies have been to the big dance. Even more impressive is the rebuild by head coach Buzz Williams. He has been able to take a last place ACC team and transform them into a tournament team in just three seasons. Virginia Tech finished 22-10 this season with big wins over Michigan, Duke, Virginia and Miami.

Getting to this point has been a challenge but it's one that Coach Williams and his staff have taken on and are proud to see the hard work beginning to pay off.

"You can't do what we've done regardless of how long I think that the year in which we've been able to accomplish it speaks to so many people that have been able to help and so many people that have been willing to do what we've asked of them", said Coach Williams.

Fans also agree that getting back to the NCAA tournament has been a long time coming.

"Being at the bottom of the ACC two years in a row at this point and now we're going dancing. It's an incredible feeling I know the players from the past two years basically are here and it's just really awesome", said Virginia Tech senior Will Timberlake.

Virginia Tech will tip-off against the #8 seed Wisconsin at 9:40pm on Thursday in Buffalo.
