ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Rain and snow are expected to hit Southwest Virginia this week.
The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is looking at the forecast very closely, and encourages drivers to do the same for the next couple of days.

While there was sunshine on Sunday, Mother Nature is about to take a turn with a snow storm expected to hit our region Monday evening.
"Every storm is different in how we approach it. With this storm, it's expected to start out with a rain event. So we're not able to pre-treat the roads with brine ahead of the precipitation, because the rain will just wash it off those roadways," says spokesperson, Jason Bond of VDOT.
Over the next day, Bond says they're going to be monitoring the forecast in case it does snow first, "In parts of our region, if it's going to start out with more snow, we will be able to brine."
Bond says it's critical for commuters to be prepared, such as leaving early from work in order to avoid the start of the storm.
He explains that if your morning commute is fairly smooth, don't be fooled, later in the day.
"Tomorrow afternoon, it's probably going to be more challenging, depending on the track of the storm. When it starts, you could be facing slippery roads, as you head home on your commute," says Bond.
While the sun has been shining today, VDOT is reminding everyone that conditions could change in the next 24 hours.
