Roanoke County leaders break ground on road-improvement project

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Roanoke County leaders break ground on a project to improve a heavily traveled road.

The first phase of the Plantation Road Bicycle, Pedestrian and Streetscape project is underway.

The project will improve the stretch of road from Interstate 81 to Williamson Road.

Some of the changes will include a shared-use path, street trees and a 'Welcome to Hollins' sign.

County leaders say that this is the county's largest business corridor.

Board of supervisors chairman Joe Mcnamara said, "I think you see that businesses in general really require and are looking for some of the amenities that we are going to improve to make it a better environment for their employees and the customers."

It is estimated that 13-16 thousand cars travel in this area every day.

Phase one is scheduled to be finished by June 2018.
