Police: Virginia man killed after stopping to resecure mattress

LEE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - State police are investigating a fatal crash in Jonesville, Va. that happened on Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened at about 2:25 p.m., on Route 58.

A 2003 Ford Ranger was traveling west on Route 58 and lost a mattress it was carrying. The pick-up truck and a 2003 Kia Sedona minivan, driven by Noah Burgan, 67, of Jonesville, both stopped after the mattress fell out of the truck.

Burgan and a passenger inside the pick-up truck exited their vehicles to try to re-secure the mattress, when a 2004 Suzuki Forenza traveling west on Route 58 hit the minivan then Burgan and the pick-up truck passenger, according to state police.

Burgan was transported to Holston Valley Medical Center where he later died.

The pick-up truck passenger and driver of the Suzuki Forenza were transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

The driver of the Suzuki, 18-year-old Asia A. Ledford, of Pennington Gap, Va., was charged with reckless driving.

The pick-up truck driver, Jeffery W. Sargeant, 41, of Jonesville, Va., was charged with failure to secure the vehicle load.
