5th grader honored for saving a life

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is recognizing one special 5th grader who, in a moment of quick thinking, saved his classmate's life.

Max Itson was riding the bus home when he saw his classmate choking on a piece of candy.

After alerting the bus driver, he smacked his classmate on the back, dislodging the candy.

The Sheriff's Department Max with a plaque Thursday for his quick actions, saying, for someone his age, it's something to be proud of.

"I think this is probably the first time in Franklin County history that we've had an 11-year-old do that. We may have had other people do it, but not this age, so we're thankful to be a part of it, we're blessed to be a part of it," said Major Mike Bowman.

In addition to the recognition, the deputies showed Max around the department, saying it's people like him that make their jobs easier every day.
