Mill Mountain Zoo returns to high-season hours

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - It's a busy time for workers at Mill Mountain Zoo as they prepare to return to high-season hours ahead of schedule.

The mild winter has prompted the zoo directors to go back to extended hours at the beginning of March, rather than the end of the month like most years.

Starting Friday, March 3, Mill Mountain Zoo will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Visitors will be able to see some of their newest additions, including two foxes and wolves. Education Manager Bambi Godkin said more exciting additions are in the works.

"We are doing some fundraising for our new native species that we want to get - of course that won't happen immediately but hopefully before the end of the busy season is over, we will have at least one of those new animals. We are hoping to get a black bear so that's very exciting," Godkin said.

The Zoo Choo Train is currently being repaired, but is expected to be up and running by April 1.
