Virginia Tech receives record number of applications for 5th year

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - Virginia Tech has a record number of applications for a fifth year in a row.  School Spokesperson Mark Owczarski says it's 8-percent higher than a year ago, includes the highest number of in state and out of state applications ever and is the most diverse pool ever.

Here is a breakdown of the numbers since 2014:

2014: 20,011

2015: 22,087

2016: 25,200

2017: 27,178

Owczarski says some students are getting early action acceptance offers now, which is common for schools that admit large numbers of students.  Virginia Tech is reviewing applications and will have another round of offers coming out in late March.

This comes as Radford University received a record number of freshman applications at more than 13,000 this year.
