Giles County Christian Service Mission triples food pantry capacity

PEARISBURG (WSLS 10) - The Giles County Christian Service Mission is expanding to reach more food insecure people in the area.

The mission just opened a new wing that has tripled its capacity for food. This will help volunteers make twice as many meals each year, from about 3,000 to 6,000.

The goal is to serve about 1,000 families.

The mission is also working to establish the first USDA Emergency Food Assistance Program in the county.

Another goal is to begin offering cooking classes to teach families about preparing healthy and affordable meals.

"It's going to bring a lot more food into the county," said misson president Morris Fleischer. "We have about 2,000 Giles County citizens that have been marked as food insecure. So the idea is to be able to become a feeding hub."

Mission leaders are asking for continued support as they move forward in this new endeavor through financial and food donations, as well as volunteers.

The mission will be open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
