(WSLS 10) - Today marks one year since a Prince William County police officer was killed in the line of duty. Ronald Hamilton is charged with capital murder in the death of Ashley Guindon while she was working her first shift as an officer. Prosecutors say that Hamilton shot Guindon and two other police officers who responded when Hamilton's wife called 911 for help. Crystal Hamilton was found shot dead in her home. The other officers survived.

The new communications director at Virginia Tech's Office of International Research, Education and Development starts today. Dana Cruikshank was at the National Science Foundation before coming to Virginia Tech in 2010 in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies and then Outreach and International Affairs.

The Virginia Cooperative Extension and Parkway Brewing begin a series of presentations today, talking about the science behind brewing and fermentation. Today's session is "The Good, The Bad, The Luck: A Flavor and Sensory Analysis of Beer." Each month, researchers from Virginia Tech's Food Science and Technology Department will talk about their research.

Roanoke County Schools holds a community meeting tonight about opioid and heroin addiction. The meetings feature people law enforcement, parents and people recovering from addiction. They will talk about how youth get prescription medication, abuse and resources for help. Tonight's meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Northside High School. There is another session tomorrow at Glenvar and one on Thursday at William Byrd.
