Tooth recovered on Taylor's Mountain in Lyon sisters case

BEDFORD (WSLS 10) - Investigators recovered a tooth from Taylor's Mountain in Thaxton in the Lyon sisters investigation. Court documents filed in Bedford County Circuit Court reveal the discovery, but do not say during which of several forensic digs since 2014 the tooth was found.

Prosecutors gave Lloyd Welch's defense team a photo of the tooth and dental records, but the court records do not indicate whose records they are.

Welch is charged with two counts of first-degree felony murder in connection to the 1975 disappearance of Katherine and Sheila Lyon from Maryland.

Welch's defense attorneys told the court they were recently advised by the Commonwealth that there is additional discovery, meaning evidence, and that they would need more time to prepare Welch's defense. That motion was filed February 16, about a week after the latest forensic dig on Taylor's Mountain.

Defense counsel asked the court to appoint Dr. Tom McClintock, a nationally known DNA analyst who is on faculty at Liberty University, to analyze DNA evidence the Commonwealth plans to present at trial.

Welch's trial is now set for September.
